Amarr in Portland-area garages

Amarr is a sectional garage door maker owned by ASSA ABLOY, the Swedish lock and door group, and Portland-area homeowners buy its doors through independent dealers or at Costco and Sam's Club. Abe, Morris and Herb Brenner founded it in 1951.

Amarr says all of its products are made in the USA. More than 4,000 independent dealers sell and install them, Window World sells them alongside the warehouse clubs, and a warehouse club purchase can leave an owner with no dealer to call once something wears out.

That is where we come in. We are a local garage door company with no tie to Amarr: we repair its doors of any vintage, hunt down sections and inserts by design name, and hang a new door when the old one is past saving.

How to tell it is a Amarr

Amarr doors give themselves away through stamped panel patterns, window trim and glass with catalog names, and composite trim on carriage styles.

  • Decorative window trim Amarr calls DecraTrim, in patterns such as Stockton, Prairie, Cathedral, Cascade, Waterford, Wagon Wheel and Sunray.
  • Decorative glass sold as DecraGlass, with names like Victorian, Heartland, Mission, Jardin and Trellis.
  • Stamped steel in short, long, flush or ribbed patterns on a Lincoln, or one of more than 100 stamped carriage house designs on a Classica.
  • Composite trim fastened over insulated steel-backed sections, the signature of a Carriage Court door.

Amarr models we see on service calls

Amarr has renamed and retired lines over seven decades, so this table sticks to the collections on its current catalog.

Amarr models commonly found in Portland and Clark County homes
ModelYears soldNotes
LincolnCurrentStamped steel in short, long, flush and ribbed panels, single, double or triple layer, with optional polystyrene rated R-6.48 to 9.05. Window inserts and dented sections are the usual parts calls.
OlympusCurrentTriple-layer steel with polyurethane insulation rated R-13.35 to 19.40, in short and long panels. Heavier than a Lincoln of the same size, so its springs are sized differently.
Heritage and Heritage Carriage HouseCurrentHeavy-duty steel, either flush or carriage styled. Dings read plainly on a flat face, so the flush version shows car contact quickly.
Classica and HillcrestCurrentStamped steel carriage house doors. Classica offers more than 100 designs plus flush and full-view versions; Hillcrest is the lower-priced option. The design name matters when ordering a matching section.
Carriage CourtCurrentEighteen designs with composite overlay trim on insulated steel-backed sections. The trim adds weight and detail to account for when one section is replaced.
Vista and HorizonCurrentVista is an aluminum-framed full-view door with clean lines; Horizon uses long, narrow glass sections. A cracked pane is a glass order sized to that opening.

Known Amarr issues and the fix

Amarr repairs run from cracked inserts and bent sections to squeaks, bottom rust and a sagging side, each matched to its fix.

  • A cracked, yellowed or missing window insert

Inserts differ from brand to brand, so we match the DecraTrim or DecraGlass pattern by name and the window size on your section. If that pattern is gone, a close match in every window keeps the door reading as one design. Garage Door Panel and Section Replacement, from $449

  • A section bent at a hinge line after a bump, with the door binding in its track

We get the rollers back in the track, straighten or replace bent track, and swap the damaged section or hinge so the door runs square again. Off-Track Garage Door Repair, from $179

  • Squeaks and jerky travel

We clean and oil the steel hinges, roller stems, bearings and springs with a garage door spray, and leave plastic rollers and idler bearings dry, as Amarr directs. Garage Door Tune-Up and Maintenance, from $119

  • Rust creeping along the bottom edge and a split bottom seal

Salt-based ice melt and standing water attack the lowest section first. We replace the seal and retainer, look for slab low spots that pool water, and tell you plainly whether that section has rusted past saving. Garage Door Weather Seal and Threshold Replacement, from $149

  • One side of the door hanging low

A frayed or slipped lift cable lets one corner drop. We replace both cables, reseat them on the drums and rebalance the springs. Garage Door Cable and Drum Repair, from $189

How to match an Amarr window insert or section

Match an Amarr insert or section by design name, not looks, since two doors that look alike from the driveway can take different parts.

  1. Name the collection

Amarr sells stamped patterns, insert styles and glass types by name, so start with the collection and panel style.

  2. Measure the window

Measure the window opening, and photograph any label or order paperwork you still have.

  3. Find the color name

Amarr offers more than 800 factory colors through its Color Zone program, drawn from Sherwin-Williams, so a section ordered years later blends in most closely with the original color name.

Keeping Amarr steel sound through a Portland freeze

Rinse off salt and grit after every freeze, because the lowest few inches of steel are where rust starts on an Amarr.

Portland airport logs a low of 32 F or colder on roughly 32 days in an average year, and any ice melt spread on those mornings tends to splash against the door. Amarr calls salt and ice melt harsh on steel and excludes salt-related surface rust from its warranty, so a bucket of soapy water afterward is cheap protection.

Twice a year, pull the release cord with the door closed and lift it by hand to about three or four feet. Amarr's guidance is that a door that will not hold there needs a professional adjustment, which in practice means a spring balance check.

Amarr questions

Can you match a window insert on my Amarr garage door?

Usually, once we know the pattern name and the window size. Amarr sells DecraTrim inserts such as Stockton, Prairie and Waterford, plus DecraGlass panels like Victorian and Mission, and they do not swap across brands. Send a photo of the window and the full door so we can identify the pattern before ordering. If it is discontinued, one current style in every window keeps things consistent.

Who repairs an Amarr door that was bought at Costco?

We do, just as we would one from a dealer. A warehouse club door is still an Amarr, with the same kinds of sections, springs, cables and rollers, so where it was purchased has no bearing on the repair. Dig out the order paperwork if you kept it: the collection, size and color listed there make ordering a matching section or insert much faster.

Is it safe to pressure wash an Amarr garage door?

No, Amarr's care guide says plainly not to pressure wash its doors, and high pressure can also damage the softer surface of a wood door. Mix about a cup of household detergent into five gallons of warm water, wash with a soft brush, rinse, and never add bleach. Black streaks on the face usually come from torsion spring oil and wash right off.

Can I lubricate the plastic rollers on my Amarr door?

Amarr says no: leave plastic rollers and plastic idler bearings unlubricated. Spray a lubricant made for garage doors on the steel hinges, roller stems, springs and bearings instead, each spring and fall. If a plastic roller still squeals, wobbles or has flat spots, it is worn out, and replacing the set is a quick job during a tune-up.

Does an Amarr Olympus need different springs than a Lincoln?

Usually, yes, because an Olympus outweighs a Lincoln of the same size. The Olympus is triple-layer steel with a polyurethane core, while a Lincoln can be single or double layer with polystyrene or no insulation. Torsion springs are wound to the weight of the actual door, and a spring sized for a Lincoln leaves an Olympus heavy at the bottom and hard on the opener.

Do I need an Amarr dealer to fix my Amarr door?

No dealer is needed: springs, cables, rollers, seals and replacement sections on an Amarr are standard garage door repairs, and we handle them across Portland and Clark County. Amarr keeps a dealer locator for shoppers who want a new door from one of its sellers, and we install new doors too when repairing yours stops being the sensible choice.
