CHI Overhead Doors in Portland-area garages
CHI Overhead Doors is a garage door maker owned by steelmaker Nucor since 2022, and several Portland-area dealers on its locator install its doors. The company has built residential and commercial garage doors since 1981, and the letters stand for Coach House, Inc.
CHI builds its doors at plants in Arthur, Illinois, and Terre Haute, Indiana. It now advertises them as made of Nucor steel and sells them through a network of dealers.
Our crew is unaffiliated with CHI. We repair CHI doors regardless of who hung them, identify sections by model number, and put in a new door when a fix would only buy a season or two.
How to tell it is a CHI Overhead Doors
The surest CHI tell is the four-digit model number, because CHI builds the panel design and the section construction into it.
- A four-digit model such as 2250 or 4216 on the dealer invoice or door paperwork, where the first two digits name the design and the last two describe the build.
- Raised panel windows in two sizes: short at 19 by 13 inches and long at 41 by 13 inches.
- Woodgrain finishes on steel with CHI names such as Accents dark oak, Accents driftwood, Accents walnut, natural oak and carbon oak.
- Carriage house doors with applied overlays in steel, wood or fiberglass on a thick insulated steel section, which is CHI's overlay carriage house line.
- Horizontal plank styling stamped into 2 inch two-sided steel, sold as CHI Planks.
CHI Overhead Doors models we see on service calls
These CHI collections and model numbers come from the current CHI catalog, grouped the way the numbers run.
| Model | Years sold | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Raised panel short: 2250, 2240, 2251, 2241, 2283, 2206, 2216 | Current | Endings 50 and 40 are uninsulated single-skin steel; 16 is two-sided steel with polyurethane rated R-17.19. |
| Raised panel long: 4250, 4240, 4251, 4241, 4283, 4206, 4216 | Current | The same construction codes on a long raised panel. Single-skin 4250 sections dent more readily than two-sided 4283 or 4216 sections. |
| Stamped carriage house: 5250 to 5216 and 5950 to 5916 | Current | Oversized stamped carriage panels with the same endings; the polyurethane versions are rated R-16.55. |
| Planks: 2327, 2347, 2357 and 2328, 2348, 2358 | Current | Two-sided steel throughout. Models ending 27, 47 and 57 use polystyrene (R-10.29); 28, 48 and 58 use polyurethane (R-17.54). |
| Overlay carriage house: 5300 to 5800 | Current | Sections 2.5 to 2.75 inches thick with steel, wood or fiberglass overlays. The 5300 to 5500 use polystyrene; the 5600 to 5800 use polyurethane up to R-18.03. |
| Full-view aluminum, Skyline flush, Sterling and Shoreline | Current | Glass and contemporary designs. Full-view aluminum comes uninsulated or with polystyrene; Shoreline is a polyurethane carriage design. |
Known CHI Overhead Doors issues and the fix
CHI calls involve dented single-skin sections, bent track, frayed cables and springs on heavy doors, with the model number noted wherever it changes the job.
-
A dented section on a single-skin CHI door, model numbers ending in 50 or 40
We order the replacement by full model number, width, height and color so panel design, gauge and window layout line up with the sections above and below. Garage Door Panel and Section Replacement, from $449
-
The door jumped its track after a bumper tap
We lower the door safely, straighten or replace the bent vertical track, put the rollers back in and check each hinge for cracks before the opener runs it again. Off-Track Garage Door Repair, from $179
-
A frayed lift cable or a door sitting crooked
Both cables get replaced as a pair and wound evenly on the drums so the bottom section lands flat on the slab. Garage Door Cable and Drum Repair, from $189
-
Springs failing on a heavy overlay or polyurethane CHI
Overlay carriage house and polyurethane doors outweigh single-skin ones of the same size. We size new torsion springs to the door actually hanging there rather than copying whatever spring a past repair left behind. Garage Door Spring Replacement, from $249
How to read a CHI model number
On CHI raised panel and stamped carriage house doors, the first two digits name the design (22 short raised panel, 42 long raised panel, 52 or 59 stamped carriage) and the last two describe how the section is built.
Planks and overlay carriage house doors run their own numbering, so check those against the catalog instead. Either way, the full model number plus door size and color is what it takes to order a section that blends in.
| Ending | Section build | Steel | Insulation |
|---|---|---|---|
| 50 | 2 inch, steel on the outside only | 25 gauge | None |
| 40 | 2 inch, steel on the outside only | 24 gauge (raised panel) | None |
| 51 or 41 | 2 inch, steel with a vinyl back | 25 or 24 gauge | Polystyrene |
| 83 | 2 inch, steel on both faces | 27 gauge | Polystyrene |
| 16 | 2 inch, steel on both faces (1-1/2 inch on the 5916) | 27 gauge | Polyurethane |
| 06 | 1-1/2 inch, steel on both faces (raised panel) | 27 or 28 gauge | Polyurethane |
Polystyrene or polyurethane: what the insulation in a CHI door changes
Polyurethane CHI doors are warmer, stiffer and heavier than polystyrene or uninsulated ones, and that changes how they get repaired.
CHI rates its polyurethane raised panel doors at R-17.19 and its polystyrene Planks at R-10.29; single-skin doors have none. Below a bedroom or around a cold-weather hobby bench, the upgrade is felt in the room long before it shows on a utility statement.
A replacement section has to match the construction of its neighbors, not only the look. Dropping a single-skin section into a polyurethane door leaves a cold, flexible band across the middle and changes the weight the springs were wound for.
What wears out first on a 1990s or 2000s CHI door?
The moving parts wear out first: lift cables fray, rollers wear flat, bottom seals split and springs reach the end of their rated cycles, while the steel sections often stay sound.
Clark County's busiest building decade was the 1990s, followed by the 2000s and 2010s, and Hillsboro peaked in the 2000s. On a CHI from those years, the model number tells us before we arrive whether the door is single-skin or insulated, which often decides between a section swap and a full replacement.
CHI Overhead Doors questions
Where does CHI Overhead Doors list the model number for my door?
The dealer invoice or warranty registration for a CHI door usually lists the four-digit model, the size and the color. That is everything needed to order a matching section. If those papers are gone, photos of the panel design, the window size and the inside of a section let us narrow the model down.
When is a dented door from CHI Overhead Doors worth fixing?
When the damage stays within one or two sections and the model is still in the CHI catalog. A single-skin 2250 or 4250 section is a fairly simple swap, and insulated sections cost more but keep the R-value intact. If several sections are creased, rust has started along the bottom, or the springs and cables are tired too, a new door often wins.
Do overlay carriage house doors from CHI Overhead Doors need special springs?
They need springs sized for their weight, which runs higher than a flat steel door of the same width. CHI builds those sections 2.5 to 2.75 inches thick in two-sided steel, then adds steel, wood or fiberglass overlays. We work out the weight of the door itself rather than copying the old spring, since an earlier repair may have fitted the wrong size.
Do I have to go back to a CHI Overhead Doors dealer for repairs?
No, CHI sells new doors through independent dealers, but springs, cables, rollers, seals and track on a CHI are standard repair parts. We service CHI doors throughout the metro and Clark County. A matching section is identified by the four-digit CHI model, so having that number ready shortens the job.
Are wood overlay doors from CHI Overhead Doors practical in Portland weather?
They can be, with steady upkeep. CHI offers wood overlays on its overlay carriage house line and says wood doors need periodic resealing or staining. By NOAA's count, Portland airport averages 157 wet days annually, so watch the bottom edge and refinish when the coating dulls. Steel or fiberglass overlays give a similar carriage look with far less maintenance.
