Genie in Portland-area garages

Genie is an Ohio opener maker, owned by Overhead Door Corporation since 1994, whose screw, belt and chain drives reach Portland-area garages from home center shelves and installers' trucks.

It began in 1923 as the Alliance Manufacturing Company of Alliance, Ohio, and named its first opener Genie in May 1954. Headquarters are in Mt. Hope, Ohio, and the factory is in nearby Baltic. Overhead Door is now a Sanwa Holdings company in Lewisville, Texas, and that shared ownership is why Genie and Overhead Door openers often share remote compatibility lists.

Genie sells a retail line through home centers, including Lowe's-specific DirectLift models, and a separate professional line through dealers. Sears sold Genie-built DirectLift screw drives too, so a Genie-built opener can even wear a Sears badge.

How to tell it is a Genie

Genie openers give themselves away by the drive on the rail, the sensor name and the model number, even when the logo has faded.

  • A threaded steel rod that spins the full length of the rail where a chain or belt would be. That is a screw drive, sold by Genie for decades under names like Excelerator and MachForce.
  • Safe-T-Beam printed on the photo eyes, Genie's name for its sensors. Genie's instructions place the beam 5 to 6 inches off the floor.
  • A four-digit model number such as 3055, 7055 or 4062 on newer powerheads, or letters and numbers such as ISD990, PCG600, IS550 or H4000 on older ones.
  • Connect in the product name, as in StealthDrive Connect or MachForce Connect, which marks built-in Wi-Fi and Aladdin Connect app control.

Genie's support library sorts its openers into families like these, and the powerhead label tells you which one you have.

Known Genie issues and the fix

Genie problems sort by drive type: screw drives groan in the cold or spin on a stripped coupler, while any Genie can have Safe-T-Beam, remote or app trouble.

  • The screw drive groans, chatters or stalls on cold mornings

Old grease on the threaded rod stiffens and collects grit, so the carriage labors along the rail. We clean the screw end to end, regrease it with screw drive lubricant, a low-temperature grade in an unheated garage, and replace the carriage if its threads are worn. • The motor spins but the screw rail sits still

A coupler joins the motor to the screw, and a stripped one lets the motor turn freely. We replace the coupler, inspect the carriage, and check that the door balances by hand so the new part is not overloaded. Garage Door Opener Repair, from $149

  • The door reverses or refuses to close

Safe-T-Beam sensors that are bumped out of line, wet, or mounted too high stop the door. We realign them inside Genie's 5 to 6 inch range, replace a failed eye or wire, and rerun the reversal test. Garage Door Safety Sensor Repair, from $129

  • A new remote will not program

Genie remotes must match the opener's Intellicode generation and frequency. We read the powerhead model, program a matching remote or keypad, and fit Genie's dual-frequency receiver kit when an older unit needs to answer current remotes. Garage Door Remotes, Keypads and Smart Controls, from $89

  • Aladdin Connect drops offline after a router change

Remotes still run the door, but the app loses it. We confirm which network the powerhead joined, pair it with the new router or password, and test open and close from the app. Garage Door Remotes, Keypads and Smart Controls, from $89

Why older Genie screw drives keep running, and what finally stops them

A screw drive has few moving parts, just a motor, a threaded rod and a carriage, so a Genie that gets greased now and then can run a long time before the carriage or coupler wears out.

In Gresham, Beaverton, Tigard and Clackamas County the 1970s is the largest build decade of today's homes, and in Clark County it is the 1990s, so a first-owner Genie can still turn up. On the roughly 32 nights a year the Portland airport hits freezing, stiff screw grease shows up as a slow, groaning open.

Intellicode, older Genie remotes and what will pair

Intellicode is Genie's rolling-code system, which picks a new code from billions of combinations on every press, and a remote has to match the opener's Intellicode version and frequency to pair.

Genie's universal remotes and keypads cover current and older Genie units plus several other brands, and its dual-frequency receiver kit lets an older opener answer newer remotes. Genie says its accessories belong only on openers built in 1993 or later with working safety sensors.

Repair or replace a Genie, and which parts we can get

Repair a Genie when the powerhead, rail and Safe-T-Beam sensors are healthy and the trouble is a carriage, coupler, gear, sensor or remote; replace it when it predates sensors or Genie stopped making its board.

Parts for current lines are easy to get, and carriages, sensors and remotes travel with us. For an Excelerator or IS series unit we check the part first, and a replacement can be a new Genie screw drive, a belt unit, or the 6072 wall mount on a torsion spring door.

Genie questions

What grease should go on a Genie screw drive rail?

Use a lubricant sold for screw drive openers, such as Genie's white lithium screw drive grease, and never WD-40, which Genie warns against. Unplug the opener, wipe the old, gritty grease off the threaded rod, then coat it along its full length. Do it whenever the rod looks dry or the opener starts to groan on the way up.

Is Genie the same company as Overhead Door?

They are sister brands under one owner. Overhead Door Corporation bought Genie in 1994 and is itself a Sanwa Holdings company. Genie builds its openers in Ohio while Overhead Door is based in Texas, and the two often appear together on remote compatibility lists, so look for both names when you shop for a remote.

How do I erase a lost Genie remote from my opener?

Clear the opener's memory, which removes every paired remote, then program back the ones you still have. The button sequence varies by Genie model, so look up the manual for your powerhead number in Genie's support library. Do it soon, because a lost remote can open the door for whoever finds it.

Can a Genie screw drive be converted to a belt drive?

No, the screw drive powerhead and rail work as a pair, so moving to a belt means a new opener. If noise is the complaint, a cleaned and regreased screw with a fresh carriage is worth trying first. If it is still too loud for a room above, a Genie belt drive or wall mount runs quieter.

Will new Genie remotes work on a Genie built before 1993?

Genie advises against it. Its accessories are meant for openers made in 1993 or later with working safety sensors, and an older unit lacks the photo eyes current rules require. Instead of adding remotes to it, we recommend a new opener and keep the springs, cables and rollers that are still sound.
